Malcesine: a tourist destination on Lake Garda

Malcesine is a small municipality of about 3,600 inhabitants located on the Veronese shore of Lake Garda, in Veneto. It boasts a tourist-environmental recognition, the Orange Flag, conferred by the Touring Club Italiano, and is located about 60 kilometers from Verona. It is the northernmost municipality on the Veronese coast of the lake and the province of Verona itself, and borders two other regions: Lombardy (province of Brescia) and Trentino-Alto Adige (province of Trento).

Territory

The municipal area of Malcesine covers an area of 69.29 square kilometers, with a significant difference in altitude that goes from the height of the lake (89 meters above sea level) to the crest of Mount Baldo (2,218 meters above sea level). The hamlet of Cassone boasts one of the world's shortest rivers: the Aril River, which is about 175 meters long.

Human geography

The municipality is composed of several hamlets, including Navene (divided into Navene di sotto and Navene di sopra) and Cassone, where the Church of Benigno and Caro Oratorio di Cassone and the Aril River, the world's shortest river, are located. Among the main places in the municipality of Malcesine are Campiano, Campagnola, Val di Sogno (where the Malcesine civil hospital is located) and San Michele.

Climate

The climate of Malcesine is of the sub-Mediterranean type. During the winter, temperatures can reach -9 degrees, while in the summer temperatures can reach up to 30 degrees. The summer heat is relieved by the two main winds: the Ora, which blows from the south and the Peler, which blows in reverse.

Origin of the name

The toponym Malcesine first appears on September 9, 844, in the will of the Archdeacon Pacifico. The original meaning is uncertain, but it could indicate "at the tombs of the dead". Over the centuries, the name has undergone many changes, such as Manascicines, Malesicine, Malesisicis, Malesisinum, Malasilice, Malsexeno and Malsesene, before assuming its current form. The etymology of the toponym remains uncertain.

History

History of the coat of arms

Malcesine had its own coat of arms, which was imprinted on coins and on the bell of the castle, forged in 1442. The image of the coat of arms is also reproduced on the doors and walls of the oldest houses in the municipality.
