Magomadas
Welcome to Magomadas, the land of Malvasia
We are pleased to introduce you to Magomadas, a municipality of 611 inhabitants in the province of Oristano in Sardinia, known mainly for its production of Malvasia di Magomadas, a prestigious and renowned wine. But our city has much more to offer, from a historical, cultural and demographic point of view.
History
The area of Magomadas has been inhabited since pre-nuragic and nuragic times, as evidenced by the numerous archaeological finds present in the territory. In the Middle Ages, the municipality was part of the Giudicato di Torres and the curatoria of Planargia. Over the centuries, it passed under the dominion of various noble families, until it was redeemed from feudal rule in 1839.
Symbols
Our municipality has a coat of arms and a gonfalon granted by the President of the Republic in 1999. The coat of arms depicts an angel smiling and the Latin motto "Angulus ridet", taken from the works of Horace, which means "my corner of land more than any other makes me happy."
Society
Demographic evolution
Magomadas currently has 611 inhabitants, but the population is constantly decreasing. In 1951, we were over double, with 1,270 inhabitants.
Languages and dialects
In Magomadas, the central or common logudorese variant of the Sardinian language is mainly spoken. Sardinian culture and tradition are still very rooted in our community today.
