Magnacavallo

An Introduction to Magnacavallo

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about the town of Magnacavallo, a small town of 1407 inhabitants located in the province of Mantova, in Lombardy. Since September 2015, it has been part of the Union of Sei Oltrepò municipalities together with five other neighboring municipalities. Geographic curiosity: the town is located near the 45th parallel, the equidistant line between the North Pole and the Equator.

Origins of the name

Have you ever wondered where the name of the town comes from? It is said to come from "magna cava in vallo", meaning the large cave (mine) located in the surrounding valley.

Magnacavallo: history, monuments and sguazzarotti tortelli.

History

The history of the town dates back to the 16th century, when a small public oratory dedicated to Saint Louis IX of France was built. In 1603, the building was elevated to a parish thanks to the work of Fra' Francesco Vescovo. In 1610, the church of Saints Peter and Paul apostles was built, which still represents one of the main monuments of the town today. In 1850, Magnacavallo had 1294 inhabitants and the surrounding area was mainly swampy and cultivated with fodder and meadows. Unfortunately, in 2014, the town was the scene of the murder of Fausto Bottura, carried out by his nephew and two of his friends.

Monuments and points of interest

Magnacavallo offers several places of interest to visit. First of all, the church of Saints Peter and Paul apostles, dating back to the 17th century, which was originally a single nave but was later expanded and restored. I also recommend a visit to the monument to the emigrant, inaugurated in 1990 and dedicated to the great emigration of the people of Mantua to Brazil. In the town hall square, there is also a museum of the emigrant, which collects documents, photographs, and memorabilia related to emigration. And then there is the beautiful Palazzo Gonzaga, a historic residence used in the summer by the Gonzaga family of Vescovato.

Society

Demographic evolution

As mentioned at the beginning, the population of the town is about 1407 inhabitants. The town is very quiet and characterized by the typical Italian way of life.

Culture

Cuisine

Magnacavallo's cuisine is very tasty and famous for its sguazzarotti tortelli, made with pumpkin, cooked wine, saorina sauce, beans, and chestnuts. It is a very particular and intensely flavored dish that is difficult to find elsewhere.

Transportation

Magnacavallo is served by the Magnacavallo railway station, on the line that connects Suzzara to Ferrara. So, if you intend to visit the town, you can easily reach it by train.

Administration

As far as the administration of the town is concerned, there are no particular curiosities to report.
