History

Montiano has a rich and fascinating history. Founded at the end of the 13th century as a possession of the Aldobrandeschi family of the County of Sovana, the hamlet saw its foundation after the abandonment of the castle of Montiano Vecchio. The village became one of the most important centers in the area for grazing and agriculture in the 14th century when it was conquered by the Senesi.

In the mid-16th century, the village fell under the control of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and from then on followed its fortunes. Today, Montiano is a peaceful and hospitable hamlet that offers visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the history, culture, and natural beauty of Tuscany.

Monuments and places of interest

Montiano is rich in monuments and places of interest, so you won't get bored easily. At the entrance of the village, we find the ruins of Montiano Vecchio Castle, which is in a wooded area. Inside the village, we can admire the Clock Tower, dating back to the Middle Ages and renovated in modern times.

Regarding religious architecture, Montiano offers the Church of San Giovanni Battista, the parish church of the hamlet, which was built in the medieval period and renovated several times in subsequent ages. The interior features Baroque and 18th-century features, with a fresco dating back to the 15th century attributed to the Giottesque school and a 16th-century baptismal font.

The Church of San Giuseppe, dating back to the 16th century and renovated in the 19th century, may have been built where the oldest parish dedicated to Saints Stefano and Ilario once stood. Finally, the Chapel of Santa Caterina, a small rural building located in the locality of Scalabrelli, represents a testament to religious life in the rural areas of Tuscany.

Society

Although Montiano was founded in the 13th century, over the years, the hamlet has undergone a significant decline in population.
