History of Sant'Arcangelo

The history of Sant'Arcangelo is very interesting! Until the fifteenth century, the village did not exist with this name. Actually, it referred to the name of the ancient Abbey built on a spur of Mount Marzolana. Previously, the village was called Ancaiello or Alancaiello and had a few fisherman's houses, a pier, and a local restaurant for bandits and rogues. The name of the hostel was "L'Hosteriaccia," and it could be reached through the rugged Sferracavallo road.

In the fifteenth century, thanks to the Braccio quarry that regulated the water level of Lake Trasimeno, many arable areas remained uncovered and were offered in perpetual colony to anyone who wanted to cultivate them. This led to the birth of the village of Sant'Arcangelo. The town was also visited by the mother of Pope Nicholas V, Andreola Paulli, a guest of Cosimo de' Medici.

The Abbey of Sant'Arcangelo

The Abbey of Sant'Arcangelo is a very ancient place that dates back to 1115, when Pope Paschal II confirmed the ownership to the Basilica of San Pietro (Perugia). In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, a scattered settlement formed around the Abbey. In 1282, 22 fires were recorded, forming a population between 88 and 100 units. The abbey reached its peak in the fourteenth century but, due to the plague, malaria, and famine, the building was abandoned in the fifteenth century. Later, Pope Martin V gave it to Monsignor Guidalotti, founder of the college of the University of Perugia.
