San Feliciano
Welcome to San Feliciano!
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about San Feliciano, a beautiful village in the municipality of Magione, in the province of Perugia. This small village is located on the eastern shores of Lake Trasimeno, at an altitude of 279 meters and is an integral part of the Regional Park of Lake Trasimeno, which enhances its natural beauty. San Feliciano is a peaceful village, home to around 600 inhabitants, who pride themselves on their history and traditions.
The history of San Feliciano
The village is named after San Feliciano di Foligno, a bishop who in the 3rd century AD went to the shores of Lake Trasimeno to preach the good news to the local fishermen. After his martyrdom, the inhabitants of the area wanted to preserve his memory and named the village after him. Today, it is possible to admire a relic of San Feliciano in the village church and participate in the celebrations in his honor, which are held every year on January 24th. In addition, San Feliciano has a second patron saint, San Spiridione, the patron saint of fishermen, who is celebrated on December 14th.
The economy and events of San Feliciano
The main activities of the village are fishing, tourism, catering, and hospitality. The harbor is used for mooring boats towards Isola Polvese, a destination of great natural interest that can be reached in about 15 minutes by boat. San Feliciano is also famous for the production of mats, an ancient activity carried out by local artisans. Every year the "Festa del Giacchio" takes place, a village festival named after the circular fishing net of the same name. In June 2007, the first Jubilee Festival also took place in honor of the Holy Crucifix, a valuable wooden work of art kept in the parish church of the village.
The monuments and art of San Feliciano
San Feliciano houses some works of art and monuments of great cultural value. The Fishing Museum, established in 1984, is dedicated to the history and technique of the ancient fishing activity in the lake. The parish church, dedicated to San Feliciano, was built in 1905 in neo-Gothic style and is characterized by a wide nave and a large ogival painting depicting San Feliciano in episcopal robes. Above the central altar, the faithful can also admire an artistic crucifix. From the churchyard, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the lake and Isola Polvese.
Within the village, outside the walls, you can also admire the Madonna della Neve, a church on the road to Monte del Lago, dating back to the 16th century and still containing some valuable frescoes.
