Montedecoro

Physical geography

Montedecoro is located in the eastern part of Maddaloni, about 4 km away from the main municipality. It borders the nearby fraction of Messercola and the municipality of Santa Maria a Vico. To the north it borders the municipality of Cervino and to the south it borders the municipality of San Felice a Cancello. The fraction is characterized by a predominantly flat landscape and is situated at about 52 meters above sea level.

Church of Santa Maria

One of the main places of interest in Montedecoro is the church of Santa Maria. It is the parish church of the fraction and is located on the central Via Carmignano. The church dates back to the 17th century and was built after the discovery of an underground chapel containing the image of Mary. The church and the adjoining convent were wanted by Father Carlo Carafa, who had purchased the land and took part in the design phase. In 1996, the church was elevated to a sanctuary by Bishop Raffaele Nogaro.
