Macchiagodena is a charming village with around 1300 inhabitants located in Molise, in the province of Isernia. Its history dates back to the ancient Sannites, as evidenced by the archaeological finds in the surrounding hills. However, the town is best known for its beautiful baronial castle, a symbol of power and defense of the territory in the past.
The History of Macchiagodena
During the Middle Ages, the castrum novo of Maccla de Godino was founded in 964 by the counts Pandolfo and Landolfo from nearby Isernia. Subsequently, the fiefdom changed hands many times, from Rome to the powerful Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno, to the families Cantelmo, Pandone, Caetani di Baranello, Mormile di Castelpagano and Piscicelli. In 1781, the Centomani family bought the fiefdom and managed to obtain the title of marquis. In 1805, an earthquake destroyed the main churches of the town, which were rebuilt in a neoclassical style. In 1970, Macchiagodena returned to belong to the province of Isernia.
Monuments to Visit in Macchiagodena
The baronial castle is certainly the most important monument in Macchiagodena. Founded as a watchtower by the Lombards, it was enlarged with an elongated square plan in 1269 by Charles I of Anjou. In 1422 it passed into the hands of Giovanni Cantelmo. Today, the castle stands on the rock, where the two largest towers appear in a step shape. Part of the building has the appearance of a noble palace, as it was renovated after the earthquake of 1805. The interior houses the town library.
