Let's Discover Macchia Valfortore Together!

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about a little known but very interesting Italian town: Macchia Valfortore. Located in the province of Campobasso, in Molise, it has about 1,000 inhabitants and is part of the Fortore Molisano mountain community.

History

Macchia Valfortore was founded as a medieval village around the 11th century and it was Count Gualtiero Gentili who built the castle and the parish church. In the 17th century, the castle passed into the hands of the Gambacorti family and today it has become a museum and the town hall.

Monuments and Places of Interest

If you are passionate about history, the Baronial Palace Gambacorta is a must-see. Built around 1150, it has a rectangular plan with three levels and a circular tower that is now used as a private residence.

If you prefer to visit places of worship, the Chapel of Santa Maria Assunta is a must-see. Located in a hamlet near the center, it was built in the 18th century. The church has undergone various vicissitudes, such as the refuge of a German family during World War II who later died of throat cancer, or the mutilation of the eyes of the statue of the Madonna by a shepherd, who then fell on a truss and was beheaded.

Finally, for nature lovers, Lake Occhito is a real spectacle. One of the largest artificial basins in Europe, it is located along the border between Molise and Puglia and is formed by the dam of the Fortore river.
