Macchia d'Isernia

Welcome to Macchia d'Isernia!

Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Macchia d'Isernia, a small town in the province of Isernia, in Molise. With a population of about 2000 inhabitants, this village has an interesting history and some really beautiful places to visit.

The History of Macchia

Macchia owes its name to its origins in the 10th century, although there are references to a "Maccla Saracina" already during the time of the Samnites. The name "Maccla" refers to the wooded area near Isernia, while "Saracina" derives from the word "serra", which means the rock on which the medieval village stands. Probably during the Roman era, being close to "Aesernia", it must have already had some farmhouses and taverns to refresh travelers. In addition, a bas-relief of Calidio Erotico, now preserved in Paris, speaks of a local innkeeper who offered to provide love services along with accommodation for refreshment.

In the Middle Ages, the fief belonged to different lords, including the Sabran of Agnone, the Pignatelli of Monteroduni, the Frezza and the De Maria. In 1630, Macchia was sold to Cesare Garcia di Castel di Sangro and finally to the D'Alena family, who held the fiefdom until 1806. Then, in 1848, Macchia became an autonomous municipality and separated from Isernia. In 1861 the name was changed to "Macchia di Isernia" and in 1881 it was included in the Campobasso college. Since 1970 it has been part of the province of Isernia.

Monuments and Places of Interest

If you are lovers of history and architecture, you cannot miss the Baronial Castle D'Alena. Built around the year 1100 by Clementina, daughter of Roger II Norman, King of Sicily, the castle dominated the square in front of the village. Over the centuries, it underwent several renovations and today it has returned to its 18th-century splendor, thanks to a restoration completed in 1984.

The facade of the castle is imposing and is surrounded by a Renaissance loggia with full arches. Inside, there is a beautiful staircase that leads to the upper floors. The ground floor was used as cellars, stables, and servants' rooms, while the upper floor was inhabited by the nobles, with several rooms and a private chapel containing various relics.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Macchia d'Isernia is a small town but rich in history and charm. Anyone who loves ancient architecture and medieval history should not miss the opportunity to visit the Baronial Castle D'Alena. I hope this short presentation has piqued your curiosity and I suggest not missing the opportunity to visit this beautiful town. Thank you for reading to the end, see you soon!
