Maccastorna

History

Maccastorna: history, symbols, monuments, geography, and economy of a Lombard municipality with only 61 inhabitants.

In the twelfth century, Maccastorna became the property of the Archdiocese of Milan. Later, it passed into the hands of important Lombard families, including the Vismara family, which exercised the "mero et mixto imperio" over Maccastorna together with Basiasco, Corno Giovine, Cornovecchio, Pizzighettone Maleo, and other territories. Later, it passed to the Bevilacqua family, which maintained control until the beginning of the nineteenth century. During the Napoleonic era (1809-1816), Maccastorna was a fraction of Castelnuovo Bocca d'Adda but regained autonomy with the establishment of the Lombardo-Veneto Kingdom.

Symbols

The decree of the President of the Republic of April 10, 1978, granted the municipal coat of arms and flag to Maccastorna. The coat of arms is a shield quartered with a peacock on a gold field, a red field, a green field, and a ruined castle on a blue background. The flag is a yellow and red split banner.

Monuments and places of interest

The Castle of Maccastorna is the most interesting building. Built between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, it still maintains its severe defensive character, despite the interventions that took place in the following two centuries. The parish church of San Giorgio, probably of thirteenth-century origin, appears heavily renovated today because of the works carried out in 1912.

Society

As of December 31, 2020, there are 9 foreign residents in the Municipality of Maccastorna, accounting for 13.85% of the total population.

Anthropological geography

The municipal territory is composed of the geographic fraction of Cavo and Cascina a corte e case sparse.

Economy

The Municipality of Maccastorna is located in the center of very fertile lands, thanks to a series of reclamation works carried out in the 1920s. Therefore, the economy is based on field cultivation, which guarantees stable employment to the population. The most important crops are corn and meadows, in function of breeding beef and dairy cattle, pigs, and pheasants.
