Maccagno con Pino e Veddasca: a young and diverse municipality

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk about Maccagno con Pino e Veddasca, a municipality populated by 2450 people located in the province of Varese, Lombardy. The town was established on February 4th 2014 as a fusion of Italian municipalities Maccagno, Pino sulla Sponda del Lago Maggiore and Veddasca, after a referendum held on December 1st 2013.

History

The establishment of Maccagno con Pino e Veddasca was formalized by regional law no. 8 on January 30th 2014, published in Supplement no. 6 of the ''Official Bulletin of the Lombardy Region'' on February 3rd 2014. In May 2014, the municipality received the postal code I-21061.

Despite the young age of the municipality, there are many stories to tell. Before the fusion, the three founding municipalities were created, in two cases, through a process of amalgamation that took place during the Fascist era. In reality, until 1927, the municipal territory was divided into ten different municipalities, in existence since the Middle Ages.

Maccagno con Pino e Veddasca is part of the Regio Insubrica work community, which acts to promote and implement cross-border cooperation projects between some provinces of Lombardy, Piedmont and the Swiss Canton of Ticino.

Maccagno with Pino and Veddasca: A diverse young municipality.

Symbols

The new municipality had initially used the coat of arms and the gonfalon of Maccagno as informal symbols, but then equipped itself with its own coat of arms, granted by decree of the President of the Republic on September 12th 2018.

The gonfalon is a yellow flag with a blue border. The coat of arms brings together elements from the emblems of the previous municipalities, such as the blue of the field and the red tower of Maccagno, the counter-rampant lions of Pino sulla Sponda del Lago Maggiore and the stars of Veddasca.

Society

Looking at the demographic evolution of the municipality, we can notice how the population remained relatively stable over the years. In 2001 it had 2361 inhabitants, a figure that remained almost identical until the fusion of the municipalities in 2014.
