History
Foundation and Development of the City
Torino is a city located in the northwest of Italy, in the Piedmont region, and is the capital of the metropolitan city of Torino. With a population of over 842,000 inhabitants as of October 31st, 2022, it is the fourth largest city in Italy. Torino is the third industrial hub in the country and one of the main cultural, educational, scientific, and tourist centers.
Torino has a two-thousand-year-old history. The city was founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini, a Celtic tribe, near the location where it is today. Later on, the city was transformed into a Roman colony by the first Roman emperor Augustus in the 1st century BC. After the domination of the Ostrogoths, it became the capital of the Duchy of Torino and then of the Marquisate of Torino, passing under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy.

From 1720, Torino became the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia, which later led to the Risorgimento, and in 1861, made Torino the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy, a role it held until 1946.
