History of Turin

Turin has a two-thousand-year-old history. Founded by the Taurini around the 3rd century BC, it was turned into a Roman colony by Augustus in the 1st century BC. After the Ostrogothic domination, it became an important Duchy, then passed under the rule of the House of Savoy. In 1563, it became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy, and from 1720 it was chosen as the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia, becoming the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861 to 1946.
