History

Lurago d'Erba is crossed by the Roman road "via Mediolanum-Bellasium" which represented an important communication route between Milan and Bellagio. The first mention of the Calpuno court dates back to the 10th century, when it is mentioned in a will of the Milanese archbishop Ansperto. In 1346, "el locho da Luyrago con le cassine de Montesello" is mentioned among the locations responsible for maintaining the road from Niguarda, in a document of the "Statuti delle acque e delle strade del contado di Milano".

Later, Lurago followed the fortunes of the pieve d'Incino, which was enfeoffed to the Dal Verme by Filippo Maria Visconti in 1441. In the fifteenth century, a part of Lurago ended up with the Bentivoglio, who were also lords of Colciago, Monticello, and Monguzzo. In the seventeenth century, the municipality was granted to the Giussani, along with Lambrugo, Anzano, Anzano del Parco, Cassina Marcetta, Cassina Visconti, Nobile, Camisasca, Brenno, and Centemero. In 1751, Lurago also extended over the hamlets of "San Giorgio", "la Casetta", "la Cadè", "li Ronchi", Cabassa, Caregiola, Fornace, Monticello, and "la Cavolta". With the administrative reorganization of the Kingdom of Italy (1805-1814), the territory of Lurago extended to the municipalities of Colciago and united and Lambrugo. In 1863, the municipality changed its name from "Lurago" to "Lurago d'Erba".

Symbols

The coat of arms of the Municipality of Lurago d'Erba was granted by royal decree on June 17, 1937. The serration of the per bend is taken from the coat of arms of the Bentivoglio ("per bend serrated or and gules"); the tower in the upper part of the shield is the symbol of the Giussani family, while the rampant lion evokes the Sormani and Balbiani families.
