Exploring the province of Campobasso
Hello friends, today I want to talk to you about the province of Campobasso, one of the most fascinating provinces in Italy. With a population of 210,249 inhabitants and an area of 2,909 square kilometers, the province is made up of 84 municipalities. The capital is Campobasso, where the institutional headquarters are located in Palazzo Magno. The province faces the Adriatic Sea to the northeast and borders other regions such as Abruzzo (Chieti province), Puglia (Foggia province), Campania (Benevento and Caserta provinces), and the province of Isernia.
Exploration of physical geography
The territory is varied and diverse, encompassing villages, towns, and cities. One can start from the mountains of the Sannita Apennines, then pass through the hills, lakes, and rivers of the hinterland and finally reach the coastal strip of the Adriatic.
Hydrography
Speaking of hydrography, the province of Campobasso is crossed by three main valleys. They are the Trigno, Biferno, and Fortore rivers, which generally have a straight course, surrounded by hills and mountains slopes. These rivers reach the sea, where the valley widens considerably. The Biferno river crosses the Guardialfiera lake, which is blocked by a dam for electricity production. The Fortore, on the other hand, passes through the Occhito lake and marks the border between Molise and Puglia. Finally, the Trigno marks the border between Molise and Abruzzo.
Lakes
There are only two artificial lakes in the province of Campobasso, but both are spectacular. The Guardialfiera lake is the largest and most fascinating, also known as "del Liscione." The two viaducts of State Road 647 of Fondo Valle del Biferno, called "Molise I" and "Molise II," are suggestive and spectacular, as they cross the lake for 8.5 kilometers, passing over the dam.
Conclusions
In conclusion, if you are looking for a province that combines natural beauty with a great history, then the province of Campobasso is definitely the right one for you. It is no wonder that so many tourists choose to visit this province every year, discovering all that there is to see and do. Next time, we will talk even more about it. Stay tuned!
