The origin of the town's name

The name Luisago may derive from the personal name ''Lupicius'' or from the root ''lues,'' which means "flowing liquid" and refers to the Fontanino river. Despite various scholars having proposed various theories about the origin of the name, the second one seems to be the most accredited.

Brief history of Luisago

Luisago already had a municipality during the Middle Ages, as reported in the Statutes of Como of 1335. However, the modern municipality of Luisago was only established on April 17, 1649, from the previous fraction of Fino Mornasco. In 1753, the municipality also included the land of the suppressed municipality of Bricola (now Portichetto), while in 1807 it was merged with the municipality of Civello, later abolished with the Restoration. Later, the first textile industries in Luisago were founded.

Let's discover the city's coat of arms and monuments

The coat of arms and flag of the municipality of Luisago were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on November 17, 1992. The most important church in the town is the Church of the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows, located in the upper part of the municipality and built by Bishop Felice Bonomini in 1968. It features a parallelepiped structure with a glass mosaic representing the patroness of the church, and inside a wooden statue of the Madonna dating back to the 500s. The Church of Our Lady of the Snows in Portichetto, on the other hand, is characterized by its octagonal plan.
