The municipal territory is located about 220 meters above sea level and is about 23 km from Varese, the capital of the province of the same name.

Climate

Luino's climate is very rainy, with an annual average between 1800 and 2500 mm, which is about twice the amount of Milan and three times the amount of other cities in the Po Valley. The solar radiation is lower compared to many other Italian cities.

Anthropological Geography

Luino includes some hamlets such as Colmegna, Poppino, and Longhirolo, and the locations of Creva and Voldomino.

History

Luino has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages. It was a subject of dispute between Milanese and Como families, but always managed to defend its freedom and communal autonomy. In 1512, it was occupied by the Swiss, but was then reconquered by the Sforza in 1515. The city obtained market rights in 1541, alternating with Maccagno, which until then had the exclusive right. This concession was confirmed in 1786, and Luino won over Laveno, which was trying to obtain the same prerogative.

In 1821, the City Council was elected, and in 1848 Piedmontese patriots landed here to incite the town against foreign occupation, and Garibaldi clashed against the Austrians in Luina. In 1867, the city dedicated its first Italian monument to the Nizzardo general Garibaldi while he was still alive. In 1882, the Cadenazzo-Luino Railway from Bellinzona, the capital of Ticino Canton was inaugurated.

The "Flower Coast" and the Market

Luino is nicknamed the "Flower Coast" due to the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Luino is also famous for its market, held every Wednesday and involving the entire city center. The market is a great tourist attraction, where you can buy local typical products, clothing, souvenirs, and much more. Additionally, the market offers a lively atmosphere of fun and an opportunity to meet people from all over the world.

In conclusion, Luino is a charming city worth visiting for its history, landscape, and famous market. The city is easily accessible from nearby Varese and the Swiss border via the Fornasette pass. Come visit us in Luino!
