The earthquake of L'Aquila in 2009 occurred near the northeast boundary of the municipality, but the town did not suffer any damage. Thanks to the shielding of the Monte Ocre-Monte Cagno group, no significant damage was recorded as in some neighboring areas.

The history of Lucoli

The name Lucoli derives from the Latin term, "Luculus", which means sacred grove. The first inhabitants were the Sabines, but the first secure historical records date back to the early Middle Ages. The first documents that mention Lucoli are found in the "Chronicon Farfense" (1062-1099) and in a bull of 1178 by Pope Alexander III. The establishment of the county of Collimento (ancient Castle of Colomonte) dates back to Count Odorisio, son of Berardo dei Berardi. The Castle of Lucoli participated in the foundation of L'Aquila, building the district of San Giovanni di Lucoli, which extended from the houses of Rivera to San Marciano. After being feudatory of the Collimento, Lucoli became royal and entered the municipal territory of L'Aquila.
