History

The present-day territory of the province was part of the Province of Nice until 1859. Subsequently, with the Treaty of Turin in 1860, the majority of the province was ceded to France. The part that remained under the Kingdom of Sardinia became the province of Porto Maurizio, composed of the districts of Porto Maurizio and San Remo. In 1923, after the fusion of the capital Porto Maurizio into the new city of Imperia, the province took on its current name.

Symbols

The official coat of arms of the Province of Imperia was approved on February 13, 1927. The province received the Gold Medal for Military Valor for the sacrifices of its people and for their activity in the partisan struggle during World War II.
