Lubriano
Discovering Lubriano
Hello friends, today I want to talk to you about Lubriano, an Italian municipality located in the province of Viterbo, in Lazio. With its 863 inhabitants, Lubriano stands majestically on the hills that border Umbria, giving visitors a splendid panorama of the Calanchi Valley and Lake Bolsena.
Physical geography
Lubriano extends over a hilly territory that develops between the Tiber Valley to the east and Lake Bolsena to the west. The village is located on a high tufaceous cliff at an altitude of 441 meters, while the altitude of its territory varies between 581 and 165 meters above sea level. On the southern side of the municipality of Lubriano there are high cliffs that overlook the Calanchi Valley, where the flow of the Lubriano Stream marks the natural border with the municipality of Bagnoregio. In the central and northern part of the territory, there is instead a plateau rich in cultivated fields and woods, which represents the last southeastern edge of the Alfina plateau.
The climate of Lubriano falls within zone E, with an average of 2203 days of rain per year.
History
Prehistoric and Pre-Etruscan Period
Certainly, the territory of Lubriano was inhabited since prehistory, as demonstrated by some findings of flint tools such as scrapers, blades, and arrows. Moreover, in the 80s of the last century, in Loc. Santo Stefano, a small Bronze Age village was found, which arose on a transhumance path that led from the Apennines to the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Etruscan Period
During the Etruscan period, Lubriano and its territory were part of the state of Volsinii, present-day Orvieto. The tombs found testify to the Etruscan presence on the territory, as well as a cut and a dense network of tunnels with an aqueduct function. Around 1890, a rich tomb of Hellenistic age was discovered in Loc. Cantolla with a funerary kit that included three bronze mirrors. The latest archaeological discoveries, still under evaluation by the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage of Southern Etruria, lead to the identification of an Etruscan necropolis with several chamber tombs and an extremely rare dice tomb structure in the Volisini area.
Roman Period
With the fall of Volsinii, the territory of Lubriano passed under Roman hegemony and was widely exploited for agricultural purposes. A dense network of roads connected the municipality of Lubriano to the river ports of the Tiber, which flows only about ten kilometers to the east, and from there to Rome. On the municipality's lands, there are numerous remains of clay material and structures attributable to the numerous productive settlements that dotted the territory. At the end of 1892, Roman burials were also found in Loc. Cantolla. A valuable find is the funeral stele made by TVLLIVS CORNELIANVS for his wife OPTATE SABINAE.
Conclusion
In conclusion, friends, Lubriano is a municipality rich in history and natural beauty, perfect for a trip out of town to discover an authentic and unknown Italy. I recommend visiting this enchanting village, perhaps in the summer when the days are long and the evenings fragrant with flowers. You will fall in love with Lubriano, just as I was fascinated by it.
