Exploring Losine: A Charming Town between Art, History and Nature

History

Losine is a city with an interesting and fascinating history. Prior to 1365, the city was a castle owned by the Griffi family. In 1365, the bishop of Brescia invested in iure feudi Giovanni and Gerardo del fu Pasino Federici di Mu in the territories of Breno, Vione, Vezza d'Oglio, Sonico, Malonno, Berzo Demo, Astrio, Ossimo and Losine.

In the following years, many families succeeded each other as local feudal lords of the city, including the Griffi and Federici families. However, starting in 1428, the city returned under the control of the Griffi family, which held the power until 1700.

Symbols

If you decide to visit Losine, you will be able to see its coat of arms and the gonfalon, which were granted with a decree of the president of the Republic in 1991. The gonfalon is a blue flag.

Landmarks and places of interest

Losine is a religious city, and its churches are spectacular.

The church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was built between 1884 and 1904 and was decorated in 1922 and 1923 to commemorate the Italian victory. The façade is in Baroque style and the interior is a single nave. Inside you can find works of art such as 16th-century frescoes, an oil painting from the 17th century depicting the Assumption of Mary, and a Madonna with Child recovered from the façade of a private house.

The old parish church of San Maurizio was the first parish church of Losine, built on the foundations of a pagan temple. The façade is Baroque, and the interior is rather bare but contains splendid frescoes by Quaglio.

The church of Santa Maria in Castello is a very ancient church dating back to the year 1000/1050 AD, and is a typical example of a castrense church, built inside a castle. The three monophores of the apse and the small monophore open in the wall at the back provide good lighting inside.
