Loria: beauty and history of the municipality in Veneto

Etymology

The toponym "Loria" could derive from the Latin personal name "Aurelia (nome)", with the initial L as a possible trace of an article ("l'Oria"). It's not clear whether the Aurilia mentioned in a diploma by Otto I of the Holy Roman Empire in 972 refers to Loria or Loreggia. In any case, it's a predial from the name of the place's owner. The forms of the toponym Loria found in ancient documents suggest an ancient palatal pronunciation ("Lorlja").

History

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Loria underwent the typical events of all the surrounding countries, passing through various Roman-barbaric dominations and kingdoms. The Municipality and its fractions were involved in the events of the powerful Ezzelini family between the 11th and 13th centuries. In 1754, Loria was the scene of mysterious "incendiary fires" that caused over 80 fires in homes and other buildings. The phenomenon had been occurring for some time in nearby villages and had attracted the attention of scholars and erudites of the time, such as Scipione Maffei.

Municipal Coat of Arms

The coat of arms of Loria represents the three small flames that recall the phenomenon of ghost lights in the 18th century that made the territory famous. This element is surrounded by a branch of laurel and one of oak and is crowned by the Municipal heraldic crown.
