Origin of the name

The name Longobucco dates back to the Latin period and derives from "longa bucca," which means "long concavity." This reference alludes to the Macrocioli stream, known in Byzantine Greek as "makrokoilos," meaning "long cavity."

Longobucco: nature, history and traditions in Calabria.

History

Longobucco has a very important history, especially during the period of brigandage. In fact, some of the most famous brigands of those times were native to this town, such as Palma, Faccione, and Santoro, known as Re Coremme. During fascism, Longobucco was also the place of confinement for some Ethiopian dignitaries who had played an important role in the Arbegnuoc.

Symbols

The coat of arms and flag of the municipality of Longobucco were granted by decree of the president of the Republic in 2005. The flag is a cloth divided in green and red.

Monuments and places of interest

The town center of Longobucco houses many places of great historical and cultural interest, such as the Sila Crafts and Environmental Defense Museum. This museum is housed in the former convent of the Minor Franciscan Friars and exhibits the peculiarities of the Sila plateau, especially related to local handicrafts, weaving of fabrics, metals, wood, and stone processing, as well as environmental protection.

Society

Longobucco has seen a constant demographic evolution in the past decades, with an increase in population in the 1950s and significant emigration in recent years. As of December 31, 2009, the foreign population residing in the municipality of Longobucco was 56 people, mainly Romanians.

Culture

Every year in September, the Puntadura fair is held, an event that celebrates the traditions and products of the territory of Longobucco and Sila Greca.

Economy

The main economic activities of Longobucco are concentrated in agriculture, carpet weaving, wood processing, and construction. Interesting prospects also open up in the field of nature tourism thanks to the woods and pristine mountains that are part of the Sila National Park. Among the local craft productions, we find the processing of wrought iron, wood, and stone, as well as the production of handmade wool, cotton, and silk fabrics with ancient and modern designs.
