The city was founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini people and then transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus in the 1st century BC. After the Ostrogoth rule, it was the capital of an important Duchy of Turin, later passing under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy in the 11th century. In 1563, Turin became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy and later, from 1720, the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia until its union with Italy in 1861.

International events

Turin has hosted numerous international events. In 1911, it hosted the Turin International Exhibition and in 2006, the XX Winter Olympic Games. In 2021, Turin will host the ATP Finals and in 2022, the city was the host of the Eurovision Song Contest.

The territory of Turin is located in the plain delimited by the rivers Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po. The Po river crosses the city from south to north and faces some alpine valleys such as the Val di Susa, the Valli di Lanzo, and the Val Sangone.

The territory of Turin was included in two UNESCO heritage sites. The first is the Savoy Residences in Piedmont, a world heritage site that includes some palaces and areas that are part of the Savoy residences in Piedmont. The second is the Po hills area, a biosphere reserve.
