The history and geography of Riolo
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Riolo, a small hamlet in the municipality of Lodi, located along the Bergamina State Road 472. Riolo is a inhabited center at 72 meters above sea level and, at the census of October 21, 2001, had only 120 inhabitants. Despite its small size, however, Riolo has a very interesting history behind it.
The ancient origin of Riolo
It seems that Riolo was born around an ancient Cistercian monastery of nuns, although this was later transferred to the city of Lodi in 1289. In 1584, the locality was renamed ''Villa Ariollo''. During the Spanish domination in Italy, Riolo was part of the municipality of Vigadore, in the Upper Bishopric of Lodi, and was a fiefdom of the marchesa Maria Serra Trivulzio.
The contemporary history of Riolo
Subsequently, in 1809, during the Napoleonic age, the municipality of Vigadore was suppressed and aggregated to the city of Lodi; it was re-established in 1816, with the Restoration. In 1870, the municipality of Vigadore was merged with the Chiosi di Porta d'Adda, forming the new municipality of Chiosi d'Adda Vigadore. In 1877, Riolo, like the whole suburb, was definitively aggregated to the city of Lodi.
Society and religion in Riolo
Today, Riolo is a small hamlet but there are still some points of interest. In the inhabited center, for example, there is a small oratory dedicated to Saint Zenone bishop. Until 1789, the locality was divided between the parishes of San Giacomo Church and the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, both located in the city of Lodi. Subsequently, from this date, it became part of the new parish of Fontana in Lodi.
