History

Fontana has ancient origins and its name derives from a fountain located near a statue of the Virgin Mary. Thanks to a miracle, the place became an important Christian pilgrimage site and a church was built in its honor. This church is now known as the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Addolorata of Lodi, although in the past it was known as the "Fontana del Moggio".

In 1505, the church was granted to the Servites, who built a convent next to it. However, in 1770 the convent was closed and the church became a parish. Later, in 1877, Fontana was annexed to the city of Lodi. Today, the church is still an important place of worship and welcomes numerous faithful every year.
