Loculi

Discovering Loculi: a small town in the province of Nuoro

Hi everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Loculi, a charming town in the province of Nuoro, located just 34 km from the provincial capital. With its 505 inhabitants, Loculi is a peaceful and relaxing place, surrounded by hills and immersed in nature.

Origins of the Name

The name of the town probably derives from the Latin term "locus," which means "sacred grove." This theory seems to be confirmed by the presence of the toponym of San Lussorio, in the locality "Su Santuariu" (which means "The Sanctuary"), near a cave that opens in the wild slopes of Monte Albo.

Loculi: history and archaeology in the province of Nuoro

History

The area of Loculi has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by numerous archaeological evidence dating back to the Nuragic and Roman periods. In the Middle Ages, the town was part of the Giudicato of Gallura and the curatorship of Orosei. With the death of the last judge of Gallura in 1296, the territory passed under the control of the Republic of Pisa, and then fell under Aragonese domination in 1323. Loculi was then incorporated into the Barony of Orosei, a royal fief, of which it shared the fate until the abolition of the feudal system, which took place in 1839.

Monuments and Places of Interest

Loculi is a true paradise for lovers of archaeology and history. Among the most important archaeological sites are the Tomb of the Giants in the locality "Sos Mojos," that in the locality "S'Ena Tunda," the "Domus de Janas" in the locality "Sos Mojos," and the "Nuraghe 'e Preda Longa," an ancient Nuragic settlement located on the top of the homonymous mountain.

Society

Loculi is a small but cosmopolitan town: as of December 31, 2019, foreign residents were 15, or 2.9% of the total population. The majority come from Morocco, followed by Romania.

Infrastructure and Transport

The territory of Loculi is crossed by the State Road 131 Central Nuorese (SS 131 d.c.n.), which allows you to reach the provincial capital, Nuoro, and by a provincial road that crosses the town center.

If you want to spend a day immersed in history and nature, I recommend visiting Loculi: you will be greeted by the beauty and peace of a small town with great historical value.
