Locate Varesino
Discovering Locate Varesino
Hello friends! Today I'm going to talk about Locate Varesino, an Italian municipality located in the province of Como, in Lombardy. With its 4,211 inhabitants, it is a small town where history and nature blend perfectly.
Some physical geography
The hilly part of the municipal territory is located north of the town and is predominantly composed of coniferous forests. This area is included in the Pineta di Appiano Gentile and Tradate Park, a real green treasure where you can enjoy long walks in nature. The southern portion of Locate Varesino, on the other hand, is flat and occupied by residential and agricultural areas. Not far from here, you will also find the Fontanile di Tradate, a stream with crystal-clear waters. If you love nature, you cannot fail to appreciate the beauty of the deciduous forests and rivers present in this splendid municipality.
A brief history of Locate Varesino
The name of the town derives from ''Locatum'', the Roman name of Locate Varesino, which was crossed by the "Via Mediolanum - Bilitio", which connected "Mediolanum" (Milan) with "Luganum" (Lugano) passing through "Varisium" (Varese). Over the centuries, this place has been an important point of exchange and communication between northern Italy and Switzerland.
Locate Varesino was part of the Contado del Seprio and then of the Duchy of Milan until the time of Napoleon Bonaparte. From an ecclesiastical point of view, it was long part of the pieve of Appiano. In 1468, even Ludovico il Moro stopped in Locate while heading towards the Sacro Monte di Varese. During the disputes that opposed the armies of Pope Julius II and Louis XII of France around 1510, the village was devastated by the passage of Swiss troops.
Even after annexation to the Italian Kingdom, the town underwent several administrative changes. In fact, from 1928 to 1950 it was a fraction of Seprio (municipality) and later had a dramatic episode in 1996, when the Carabinieri marshal Sebastiano D'Immè was seriously injured in a shootout. However, Locate Varesino has always known how to rise and recover from difficulties.
Symbols of Locate Varesino
The coat of arms and the banner of Locate Varesino were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on February 3rd, 1971. The blue bands with silver waves represent the fountainheads, which partially channeled into underground pipes, ensure water supply to the area. The fir tree refers to the richness of the forest heritage protected by the Pineta Park, whose boundaries run in the northeastern part of the town. Finally, the mulberry leaves, wheat, and grapes represent the main agricultural products and the country's economy. These symbols fully reflect the identity and history of the municipality of Locate Varesino.
In conclusion, if you are looking for a peaceful place immersed in nature, Locate Varesino is truly the place for you. Just a few kilometers from Varese and Como, it is easy to reach and offers multiple opportunities, such as walks in the woods, visits to local farms, or simply the possibility of spending a day in complete relaxation.
