Locate di Triulzi

Locate di Triulzi: a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Milan

Hello everyone! Today I'm going to talk about Locate di Triulzi, a municipality located in the Metropolitan City of Milan, in Lombardy. With its 10,279 inhabitants, it is one of the most important towns in the southern/southeastern area of the Metropolitan City. In fact, the province of Pavia begins just after Locate, along the ex-State Road 412, which leads to Val Tidone, in the immediate Piacenza Apennines.

Physical geography

Locate di Triulzi is located within the South Milan Agricultural Park and is characterized by an altimetric variation that goes from a maximum of 98 meters in the northern area to a minimum of 70 meters in the Valle delle Volpi, along the Southern Lambro. Note that Locate is the lowest altitude point in the entire province of Milan, along with Pieve Emanuele.

Locate di Triulzi: history, monuments and curiosities in the Milanese municipality.

History

The municipality of Locate di Triulzi was included in the Ticino department since 1797. In 1862 it assumed the new name of "Locate di Triulzi", which made it more famous nationally.

Monuments and places of interest

The territory of Locate di Triulzi boasts a historic castle, the Trivulzio Castle, built in the 14th century. The last illustrious inhabitant of the castle was Princess Cristina Trivulzio Belgiojoso, who left it as an inheritance to her daughter Maria in 1871. Since then, the castle has been rented out and divided into many private apartments.

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Fontana is instead located between Locate di Triulzi and Pieve Emanuele, on the right bank of the Lambro, on the left side of the deep valley. It consists of three superimposed churches and from afar one can admire the slender bell tower almost 35 meters high. The sanctuary was built above a spring and originally, perhaps since the 13th century, a tabernacle dedicated to the Madonna had been erected on the edge of the Lambro valley, near a natural spring or source.

Society

Locate di Triulzi has had a very interesting demographic evolution. In 1751 the village had 1600 inhabitants, while in 1771 the population had increased to 1547. In 1805 there were 1650 inhabitants, while after the annexation of Opera in 1811, the population reached 2459. In 1853 there were only 2028 inhabitants.

Infrastructure and transport

Locate di Triulzi is connected to the cities of Milan and Pavia thanks to the S13 line of the Milan suburban railway service. In particular, Locate Triulzi Station is one of the main ones in the area.

And that's all about Locate di Triulzi! If you're in the area, we recommend visiting this municipality, rich in history and culture. See you next time!
