Lizzano

Welcome to Lizzano: a city with a Mediterranean climate

Lizzano is a city of 9571 inhabitants located in the province of Taranto, in Puglia. The city, called "Licyanum" in Latin and "Lizzanu" in Salento dialect, is located about 25 km east of Taranto, in Salento. This wonderful city is located on the southern edge of the Tarantino Murge, where they descend gradually towards the Ionian Sea.

The climate here is Mediterranean, with mild temperatures throughout the year, even in winter. Lizzano is part of many associations, such as the national association "City of Wine", the Local Action Group "Terre del Primitivo", the wine road "Primitivo di Manduria and Lizzano DOC", the consortium "Grande Salento" and the Union of municipalities "Land of the Sea and Sun".

Physical geography

The city of Lizzano is located in a territory that is almost flat, with an altitude ranging from a minimum of 0 m to a maximum of 97 m. Marina di Lizzano is located about 6 km from the town center. The municipal territory borders the municipality of Fragagnano to the north, Sava and Torricella to the east, the Ionian Sea to the south and the administrative island of the municipality of Taranto to the west.

The coastline, mainly sandy and characterized by fine white sand, is characterized by dunes and back dunes with the typical presence of Mediterranean scrubland. The agricultural landscape of the city is characterized, instead, by olive groves, mixed tree crops, cultivated fields, vineyards and almond groves. The spontaneous vegetation and Mediterranean scrubland occupy the highest and rockiest areas.

The city of Lizzano is rich in ancient testimonies dating back to the Neolithic period. The countryside is characterized by the presence of many dry stone walls, megalithic specchie, 23 farms and typical Salento trulli. The pajaru (truddu/tródduri in Lizzano dialect) is a dry stone construction made entirely of stones taken from the rocky ground to make it cultivable. These constructions were used as a shelter for animals, tools and people.

Lizzano, a Mediterranean city between history and nature.

Hydrography

In the municipal territory of Lizzano, there is a predominantly torrential and seasonal watercourse, called the Ostone river (lu Sctoni in Lizzano dialect). The area around the river is very interesting both from an environmental point of view, thanks to the presence of many animal species such as frogs, fish and birds, and from a historical point of view.

A Salento city

Lizzano is a full-fledged Salento town, thanks to its culture, dialect, and traditions. For example, here the feast of San Donato is celebrated on August 7th, in which the patron saint is carried in procession through the city streets.

Furthermore, Lizzano is part of various associations and consortia that promote tourism and culture in Salento. Like the national association "City of Wine", which deals with promoting the wine and gastronomy of the area, the Local Action Group "Terre del Primitivo" which deals with promoting the territory and local economic activities, the wine road "Primitivo di Manduria and Lizzano DOC", which promotes the DOC wines of the area, and the consortium "Grande Salento" which deals with promoting tourism, territory, and cultural activities in Salento.
