History

The history of Livo is ancient and fascinating. The first mention of the municipality within the Statutes of Como dates back to 1335, where its strategic position on the Via Regina was referred to. During the Duchy of Milan, Livo followed the events of the parish of Gravedona and the fiefdom of the Tre Pievi in which it was inserted. With the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy, Livo was annexed to the municipality of Peglio, only to have the decision reversed and reconstituted as an autonomous municipality.

Religious architectures

Livo is a small town that still preserves many of its historic buildings, including several beautiful churches. The church of San Giacomo Vecchia is an example of religious architecture dating back to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Externally, the façade is introduced by a porch with vaults adorned with frescoes on the theme of the Genesis stories. The church was elevated to parish in 1446 and subsequent restoration works have given the nave ogival transverse arches and frescoes dating back to the fifteenth century.

The church of San Giacomo Nuova, on the other hand, dates back to the eighteenth century and is characterized by its gabled façade with a large portal. The interior has a single nave with a barrel vault and side chapels dedicated to the patron saints.

Finally, in Livo there is also the church of Sant'Anna, located in the center of the town. This sacred building was built between the 1700s and 1800s in baroque style, and inside you can still admire the original frescoes.
