Liscate
Liscate: a municipality in the metropolitan city of Milan
Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about a Milanese municipality that many of you probably don't know: Liscate. It is a town of about 4017 inhabitants located in the metropolitan city of Milan, precisely in the Martesana area.
Physical geography
Liscate is located less than 3 kilometers south of Melzo, along the provincial road Rivoltana. The historic center is enriched by some court farms and a more recent residential area.
Name origins
The name Liscate, according to some historians, would derive from the Schoenoplectus lacustris marsh plant, still present on the territory of the municipality, which was used to produce the vegetal part of wine flasks. Others believe that the name derives from the Latin term Luscus, with the suffix -ate.
History
Coat of arms
The origin of the coat of arms of the municipality of Liscate is unknown, but it is thought to have been created to distinguish itself from the coats of arms of other municipalities.
Monuments and places of interest
The church of Saints George and Lorenzo, with its characteristic bell tower, is located in a sacred place already used in the Roman and early medieval period. Among the places of interest there is also a monument dedicated to the famous writer Alessandro Manzoni, who in his work "The Betrothed" mentions the municipality of Liscate.
