Lirio
Lirio: a hilltop town in Lombardy
Hello everyone! Today I'll be talking about Lirio, a small town in the province of Pavia, in Lombardy. Lirio is located in the hilly area of the Oltrepò Pavese, surrounded by the beauty of the Scuropasso stream valley.
History: from the Middle Ages to the end of feudalism
The history of Lirio dates back to the 11th century, when the town belonged to the Monastery of Santa Maria delle Cacce. Like the nearby Montalto Pavese, also owned by the monastery, Lirio came under the rule of Pavia in 1164 and belonged to the podesteria and the fief of Montalto, until the end of feudalism in 1797. In the 18th century, Lirio passed from the fief of Montalto to that of Montecalvo Versiggia, under the lordship of another branch of the same Belcredi family. During this period, the largest landowner was the Castiglioni College of Pavia. Due to the dedication of the parish to Saint Paul, Lirio is sometimes confused in local history with a disappeared municipality of San Paolo in the fief of Broni, which was instead located near the Po river.
Symbols
The town's coat of arms and flag were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on December 28, 2015. The flag is a split banner of red and green.
Society: the demographic evolution of the Municipality of Lirio
The municipality of Lirio has 134 inhabitants. A small figure, but it is part of the beauty of a hill town that exudes tranquility and nature. With regard to demographic evolution, Lirio is a town that has seen a constant decrease in its population. In fact, in 1921 the municipality had 530 inhabitants, while in 1951 it had 445. In the 2001 census, the population was 179 inhabitants, and currently it stands at 134.
Administration: the Oltrepò Pavese Mountain Community
Lirio is part of the lower band of the Oltrepò Pavese Mountain Community. This means that the municipality works in collaboration with the other municipalities in the area, with a view to improving the services and quality of life of its citizens.
