Lipomo
Welcome to Lipomo, the municipality of the Como province
Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Lipomo, a municipality of the Como province in Lombardy, with a population of around 5,937 inhabitants. For those who may not know, Lipomo is part of the diocese of Como.
Origins of the name
There are different theories regarding the origins of the toponym "Lipomo". The most credible traces the name back to the ten-year war between Como and Milan, during which "Lepomum" and "Leppomum" are mentioned in the poem of the so-called "Cumae anonymous". However, it could be a transcription error that instead refers to "Leponium", the name of a commander of a military outpost in the outposts of Como.
Another theory suggests that the name derives from the combination of the Greek words "lipo", meaning deficient or lacking, and "omoios", meaning similar, therefore uneven or non-uniform, in relation to the irregular nature and ledges of the area. A less reliable third theory instead suggests a derivation from the French "lieu-pommes", meaning place of apples or potatoes.
History
The oldest traces of civilization in Lipomo are found in rock carvings on the "Sass sura Lipomm" and the "Sasso di Mezzo", two mica rocks on Mount Croce, dating back to the Bronze Age (between 1000 and 800 BC). Lipomo was refounded by the Romans after the conquest of Como in 59 BC.
During ancient times, Lipomo could have been a resort place sheltered from the raids of the people of Lario. The area of "Curt Granda" appears to have been the site of a non-permanent Roman encampment.
As for the Middle Ages, there are remains of an ancient settlement in the area.
