Acquacalda

Acquacalda: a slice of paradise on the island of Lipari

If you've been fortunate enough to visit the Aeolian Islands, you've probably heard of Acquacalda. This district of Lipari, located approximately 10.5 kilometers from the town center, is a small slice of paradise that will leave you breathless.

The location of Acquacalda

Acquacalda is located in the northernmost part of the island of Lipari and is approximately 3 nautical miles from the island of Salina. Its location makes it very similar to Canneto (Lipari), both being strongly oriented towards the beach and exposed to high waves, although not very common.

The history of Acquacalda

The name Acquacalda probably derives from the ancient presence of thermal springs that have since disappeared. However, the history of this corner of Lipari is mainly inseparably linked to the exploitation of pumice stone. Already at the beginning of the 17th century, there are traces of the extraction of materials present in the territory, while the industrial exploitation of pumice began around the end of the 19th century and with it the urban development of the village.

However, the last years of the 20th century saw a progressive decline in mining activity, which completely ceased in Acquacalda in 2000. This also occurred as a result of the inclusion of the Aeolian Islands in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites for the unique geological and particularly volcanological uniqueness of the places. Today, the population of Acquacalda, estimated at around 180 inhabitants, mainly lives on tourism.

The Chirica volcano

The main attraction of Acquacalda is the Chirica volcano, whose last eruption dates back about 1600 years ago and was characterized by three large emissions of obsidian and pumice. The three major flow systems are still identifiable in Porticello and Acquacalda for pumice and in Punta Castagna for obsidian.

There are many organized excursions to visit this natural wonder. Trekking enthusiasts, for example, can choose to follow the path that leads from the village to the top of the volcano, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the coast and the archipelago. A short walk from the sea, on the other hand, you can stroll among the lava rocks and admire the beauty of the pumice.

The beauty of the sea

But Acquacalda is not only volcanoes and pumice: the sea here is incredibly beautiful, crystal clear and rich in life. The beach, although small, offers an unforgettable experience: a walk on the sand, a dive in clear waters and a pleasant sunbathing.

Furthermore, the village offers numerous services for tourists, such as restaurants and bars, where you can taste Aeolian cuisine specialties or simply admire the view while sipping a cocktail.

Bibliography and other projects

If you want to deepen the history of Acquacalda and the Chirica volcano, I recommend consulting the bibliography available on several websites. In addition, numerous photographs are available on some portals that will make you fall in love with this magical place.

In conclusion, if you are planning a trip to the Aeolian Islands, Acquacalda is an absolutely not-to-be-missed stop. Here you will find everything you need for an unforgettable vacation: nature, beauty, history, relaxation, and fun. We await you in Acquacalda!
