Origins of the name Lioni
The name of the city probably derives from the name of the person who owned the land: Leo, whose genitive is Leonis, meaning "of Leo", which was used to identify the land belonging to his family. However, there are other theories, such as the one advanced by several scholars who argue that the Lioni people descended from the Liguri Apuani who were present in Samnium around the 2nd century BC. According to some, there would also be a relationship between the name Liguri and Lioni. However, this hypothesis seems unlikely since the Liguri Apuani were forcibly transferred to a territory far away from what would become the settlement of the Lioni people.
