Linarolo
A trip to Linarolo
Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you about a small town in Lombardy: Linarolo. With its 2,798 inhabitants, this town is located in the province of Pavia, a short distance from the Po River and the Ticino River confluence at the Becca bridge in the Vaccarizza hamlet. The center develops around the delightful square that houses the parish church of Sant'Antonio Abate.
Physical geography
Linarolo is surrounded by very fascinating natural areas, such as the "Boschi di Vaccarizza", which are part of the Lombard natural park of the Ticino Valley. In addition, the Ticino River flows into the Po River right in the Vaccarizza hamlet.
Origin of the name
The name Linarolo originates from the Latin term linum usitatissimum which, in Italian, means linen. This cultivation was very widespread in the surrounding areas of the town.
History
The municipality of Linarolo
The municipality of Linarolo was documented for the first time in 1181. In the fourteenth century, the territory was owned by the Cani of Pavia and later by the Beccaria. In 1450, it became part of the fief of Belgioioso, but then passed to the Mezzabarba and, by inheritance, to the Calderara di Pavia in 1723. The whole territory of Linarolo was part of the domain of Belgioioso for many centuries, first under the Estensi and then under the Da Barbiano. In 1872, the suppressed municipality of Vaccarizza was merged with Linarolo.
The municipality of Vaccarizza
The municipality of Vaccarizza was part of the "Campagna Sottana" of Pavia, and was included in the team (podesteria) of the Vicariate of Belgioioso. In the eighteenth century, the small inhabited centers of Ospedaletto and San Leonardo were also added to the municipality. In 1872, the municipality of Vaccarizza was abolished and merged with Linarolo.
Symbols
The symbol of Linarolo is a coat of arms that depicts a flax plant, the banner is a yellow cloth and the tower is a symbol of the defense of the territory, given Linarolo's strategic position along the Via Regina that crossed the territories of San Leonardo and Ospedaletto.
The Via Francigena
Linarolo is located on the Via Francigena and was, in the past, a place of passage for pilgrimages. In his "Itinerary for pilgrims heading to Rome" from 1400, the Duke of Milan Gian Galeazzo Visconti recalls the existence of a hospital for the "Romei". Walking in this territory is like taking a trip back in time, immersed in nature and history.
If you love nature, history and the pleasure of travel, Linarolo can be a suitable destination for you. By visiting this territory, you can discover its secrets, which date back many hundreds of years. So, what are you waiting for? Set off on a journey to this wonderful Lombard locality.
