Limone sul Garda

Discover Limone sul Garda

Hello friends! Today, I'll be telling you about Limone sul Garda, a tourist destination located in the province of Brescia in Lombardy. With its 1164 inhabitants, Limone is one of the smallest municipalities in Italy, but don't be fooled by its size. This location is in fact one of the most visited on the Brescia riviera and I assure you that visiting it will be a unique experience.

Physical geography

Limone sul Garda is located on the border between three regions: Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige, and Veneto. It is the most northern municipality on the Lombardy side of Lake Garda and the most eastern in the province of Brescia. It borders Riva del Garda and Ledro in Trentino-Alto Adige to the north and Malcesine in Veneto to the east. To the south and west, it borders Tremosine sul Garda. It is 65 km from Brescia, 50 km from Trento and 90 km from Verona.

Origins of the name

The name Limone recalls the fruits of Citrus × limon, which grow in this area. However, this is not the origin of the name. It is thought to derive from the Celtic term "limo" or "lemos" ("ulmus" in Latin) or from the Latin word "lima" to indicate a river that would have eroded the terrain due to the current. Some local sources, instead, claim that it derives from the Latin term "līmen" ("border") in reference to the boundary between Brescia and the jurisdiction of the bishop of Trento.

History

During the Duchy of Milan, Limone sul Garda self-produced lemons to avoid importing them from abroad. This is demonstrated by the artificial terraces with pillars designed to lay protective covers for any winter frosts and the fact that braziers were often lit in the lemon houses to heat the air. Today, the massive production of lemons is no longer advantageous for the municipality.

The description of the lemon houses that Goethe wrote in "Italian Journey (essay)" is famous. To safeguard this historical and architectural heritage of Lake Garda, the Municipality of Limone restored the "del Castel" and "Villa Borghi" lemon houses, which can be visited.

What to see

In addition to the lemon houses, Limone sul Garda offers many other attractions. Along the lakefront, there are numerous restaurants and bars with a view of the lake. The historic center is characterized by narrow cobbled streets and stone houses. You could also visit the church of San Benedetto, built in the mid-17th century. I also recommend taking a walk on the bike path that runs along Lake Garda.

Climate

The climate of Limone sul Garda is mild for most of the year, thanks to its proximity to Lake Garda. In summer, temperatures can reach 30 degrees Celsius, but the lake breeze makes them more tolerable. In winter, temperatures rarely drop below zero.

Symbols

The Municipality of Limone sul Garda has adopted a coat of arms and a banner. The coat of arms represents a lemon house, while the banner is a blue flag.

I hope that my description of Limone sul Garda has made you want to visit this location. You won't regret it!
