Limena

Welcome to Limena, in Veneto!

Hello everyone! Today we'll be talking about Limena, a town in Veneto located north of the city of Padua. With its population of 7912, it's a peaceful and welcoming place with lots to offer. Limena has an ancient history and a name with Latin roots that may have been influenced by the Greek language.

Origins of the name

The name Limena appears to come from the Latin word "limen," meaning "threshold of land jutting out from the swamps" or "boundary between Padua and the ancient Vicentino County." However, there's also a possibility it has a Greek root with the meaning of "port, refuge, asylum." What we know for sure is that the toponym is attested as early as 913 as "Villa que dicitur Limena."

History

Prehistory and myth

Unfortunately, when it comes to prehistory, information is very limited. However, we have some archaeological finds in the Padua## Montà area adjacent to Limena, which suggest anthropization as early as the Neolithic period.

Ancient times

As for the Roman period, we have a lot more information about Limena. Roman tombs have been found in the area of "Tavello (Limena)," and we know that three Roman roads (the Via dell'Arzere, the Via di Val Medoaci, and the Via Aurelia Veneto) crossed the territory of Limena.

Furthermore, Emperor Berengar of Friuli recognized the "pieve" of Limena in a document dated April 20, 918, probably confirming the importance of the place already in ancient times.

Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages, Limena suffered the same difficulties as the capital city of Padua, including invasions by various "barbarians." Around the seventh century, the territory of Limena was reduced with the distinction of the "pieve of Limena," which was assigned to Vicenza until 1157. In that year, Pope Adrian IV ordered its reinstatement under the Diocese of Padua.

During the Communal Age, Limena fell under the influence of Padua.

The Evolution of Limena

After the Second World War, Limena underwent a remarkable transformation: from a predominantly agricultural center, it evolved into an important center of industrial production. Today, the town shows a very interesting urban development and numerous production facilities.

Conclusions

Here's Limena for you: a little gem of Veneto that has a long history to tell. From prehistoric finds to noble Roman and medieval adoptions, the town has had a rather complex journey to become what it is today: a vital, modern, and beautiful town. Thank you for reading this summary, and if you have the chance to visit Limena, don't miss it!
