Welcome to Limatola

Limatola is a charming municipality located at the foot of a hill in the Benevento province in Campania. The village has around 4,154 inhabitants and is the westernmost municipality in the province. It is surrounded by municipalities belonging to the province of Caserta and guards the course of the Volturno River.

The history of Limatola

The name of Limatola comes from "limata", a Latin word meaning sand or a sandy place. The municipal territory has ancient origins and has been found with numerous artifacts dating back to the Sannite Age and Roman Civilization. In 842, the Lombard count Landolfo of Caserta brought a victory against the Beneventans there. In 1064, it belonged to the Montecassino abbey. During the Angevin period, it fell to the Beaumont and in the XIV century, to the Cantelmo and then to the D'Artus. In the following century, it became a fiefdom of the de la Rath and later belonged to the de Capua, Mastelloni, and Pisan Gambacorti. In 1811, it became part of the Administrative Subdivision of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and in 1861, with the Unification of Italy, it belonged to the Benevento province.

Limatola: history, monuments, and social life.

Monuments and places of interest

The Castle of Limatola is located on the high part of the historic center, on a hill in a strategic position. It was built by the Normans on the remains of a Lombard tower. In the Renaissance, significant restoration work transformed it from military architecture into a lordly residence, while preserving some defensive features. After decades of abandonment, the building was restored in 2010 and has become a hotel restaurant. The castle is surrounded by a wall interspersed with circular towers with scarp up to the height of the cornice. The palatine chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas preserves an ancient crucifix and the original door. Some rooms of the castle are decorated with mainly 18th-century frescoes.

The Church of San Biagio already existed in 1113 but was radically renovated in 1599 and again in 1734. The interior, with a single nave, is embellished with 18th-century stuccoes and preserves two late Renaissance paintings.

Social life

Limatola has seen demographic evolution over the years. The society of the village organizes many events, such as "Il Borgo dei mestieri", a manifestation about ancient crafts, which takes place on the last weekend of June. Another famous event is "La Consagra," dedicated to the 17th-century consecration of the Church of the Annunciation, which takes place in mid-July.

The inhabitants of Limatola also love sports. Sipremix Limatola is a Futsal team that since 2019/20 has played in the national series B championship.
