The municipality of Limana stretches along the northern slope of the Belluno Prealps and is crossed by the Piave river along its northern boundary. In addition, the territory is intersected by numerous other minor watercourses, such as the Limana, Cicogna, Refos Stream, Federana, and Comenda.
Orography
With its mountainous terrain, Limana represents the ideal place for nature lovers and trekking enthusiasts. The hills of the municipality are interrupted by the rock cliff that delimits the mountainous area. Among the most significant reliefs are Monte Pezza, Col delle Poiatte, Monte Cor, Monte Sambuga, Col del Balcon, and Monte San Pietro in Tuba. In addition, there are several plateaus alternating between the valleys, such as Pian de le Femene, Montegal, and Valpiana.
Origins of the Name
The name Limana derives from the river that runs within the municipality. According to some theories, the origin of the name is linked to the Latin word "līmen," which means border. Other theories propose the association with the Latin "imago," "-inis," which means chapel or tabernacle, through "Imaina" or "(L)Imana." Instead, others have linked it to the Latin "imus," through "imanus," in the sense of a place located down. In short, there are several hypotheses about the origins of the name!
History
Prehistory
The territory of Limana has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, about 5000 years ago. The first inhabitants settled on the Prealpine ridges, in strategic positions and more easily accessible from the Po Valley. In the areas of Cros and Triches, artifacts dating back from the Late Neolithic to the Bronze Age have been found. In the latter location, a real village was born.
Bronze Age
During the Bronze Age, the first "castellieri," that is, fortified settlements, arose in Limana, including that of Colle di San Pietro in Tuba, where the eponymous castle later stood.
What to See
If you decide to visit Limana, you cannot miss the Castle of San Pietro in Tuba, which is located on a hill at an elevation of 796 meters and offers a breathtaking view of the Valbelluna. The castle, dating back to the twelfth century, was destroyed by the Hungarians and then rebuilt in the fourteenth century by the Mazzorin family. Today, the castle belongs to the municipality and has been restored.
Another interesting place to visit is the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate, where numerous frescoes dating back to the end of the fourteenth century can be admired. Not far from the Church is also the Clock Tower, dating back to the seventeenth century.
In addition, for nature lovers, Limana offers numerous paths and hiking trails between the mountains and valleys. And for sports enthusiasts, the municipality has tennis courts, football fields, and a large gym.
