The history of Lignano Sabbiadoro

Lignano was already inhabited during the Roman Civilization, which had built a military outpost for the lagoon control. The city's name, "Lignanum," probably derives from the presence of wolves in the area frequented by these animals. Until the arrival of the Republic of Venice, the city had only eight inhabitants on the tip. It was not possible to access it by carts, but only on foot along the new road.

The resort developed in the 1930s of the twentieth century. The first hotel settlements date back to the end of the nineteenth century when the peninsula was only reachable by sea. The pine forest was the predominant element of the area, and the only rural settlements were located along the lagoon's coastline.

In 1903, the first modest beach establishment was built, followed by the first hotel. However, due to malaria in the marshes adjacent to the peninsula, Lignano's development only occurred after the hydraulic reclamation works of unhealthy territories carried out in the 1920s. In 1926, the first municipal road was opened between the localities of Lignano and Latisana, allowing the birth of a first residential nucleus.

In 1935, with the establishment of a Tourist Board, the name Sabbiadoro was added to promote the city. In 1938, Lignano Sabbiadoro had about a thousand beds with a tourist movement estimated at over sixty thousand presences.

In conclusion, Lignano Sabbiadoro offers its visitors a wide range of high-quality tourism services. Its privileged location, history, and climate make it an ideal destination for holidays.
