Physical Geography
Licenza is located at an altitude of 550 meters, on the eastern foothills of the Lucretili Mountains. The climate is classified as zone E, with 2260 GR/G.
History
The ancient core of Licenza has medieval origins and was founded in a dominant position on the valley of the Licenza River, formerly called "Digentia". For centuries, it was a fief of a branch of the Orsini family, but in the 17th and 18th centuries, the Borghese family acquired and held it until the abolition of feudalism. In 1867, the municipality was involved in the Roman Agro Campaign for the liberation of Rome, while with its annexation to the Kingdom of Italy, it became part of the Province of Rome, including the hamlet of Civitella.
Monuments and Places of Interest
Licenza is famous for its cultural attractions, including the Orsini Palace, the Villa of Horace, the Orsini Nymphaeum, and the Orazian Civic Museum. The Villa of Horace, which belonged to the famous Latin author Quintus Horatius Flaccus, was given to him by Gaius Cilnius Maecenas in 33 BC, while the Orsini Nymphaeum dates back to the 15th century and is identified as "Bandusia", mentioned by Horace in his "Odes". Licenza is also known for the Regional Natural Park of the Lucretili Mountains and the Art Tour in the Garden of the Five Senses, where there are seven sculptures in Roman Travertine permanently installed in the Garden of the Five Senses.
