Leporano

Welcome to Leporano!

Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Leporano, a municipality in the province of Taranto in Puglia. There are about 8,236 inhabitants and it is part of Salento, just like all the municipalities in the eastern part of the Ionian province.

A brief history of Leporano

The origin of the name Leporano is uncertain, but it seems to derive from a Roman leprarium. The first settlement dates back to 736. Until 1820, it was a fraction of the municipality of Pulsano. In the last forty years, the population has increased significantly due to the tranquility of the town and its proximity to Taranto.

Leporano's society

There are 98 foreign citizens residing in Leporano as of January 1st, 2022. The dialect of Leporano is particular because it combines Salento elements with the fall of atonic vowels, a typical characteristic of Apulian-Salento transition dialects, such as the Tarantino dialect.

The name of the town is Leporano, but in the local dialect it is called Lupràne. In fact, the dialect of Leporano tends to soften the final unaccented vowels and lengthen the tonic vowels. In any case, the population of Leporano speaks the dialect and stands out from the inhabitants of nearby towns for their strong Taranto accent.

In summary, Leporano is a small Puglian municipality with an interesting history, places of interest to visit, and a unique local culture that combines various linguistic influences. If you are looking for a peaceful and authentic place, Leporano could be the right destination for you.
