Before delving deeper into the history and curiosities of the place, it is worth noting that the hamlet enjoys a certain autonomy for the separate administration of common goods. The Piedelpoggio Agricultural University, in fact, is part of the Montepiano Reatino Mountain Community.
History
Piedelpoggio boasts an ancient history, already noticeable in the layout of the settlement that probably dates back to the year 1000, rebuilt after the earthquake of 1703 that destroyed almost all the inhabited nuclei of the plateau. The inhabited nucleus develops along the main road, still paved with sàmpietrini, dedicated to Angelo Felice Maccheroni, a shepherd and poet who was born in this hamlet and became famous for celebrating the life of the so-called vargari, the sheepdrivers.
At the entrance of the village, there is the parish church dedicated to the Madonna del Cerreto, whose name seems to derive from the discovery of the statue (in wood) in a wood near the homonymous locality, which dates back to 1659. The church overlooks Piazza Luigi Risa, another meeting place for the community.
The structure of the village
Walking along the main road, you enter the heart of the village, still intact in its original structure, consisting of narrow houses that develop on several levels. The base was used as stables, while access to the upper floors is always via stairs, covered with roofs and closed by side walls. Nothing is left to chance, not even the smallest passages between the houses, all accompanied by a name that always sounds important, engraved on marble plaques.
Along the way, the road opens up and forms three small squares, with a familiar and welcoming appearance, intended to be meeting places and markets. Especially in summer, the squares are animated by tourists and elderly residents who come together to play cards.
