Welcome to Nuoro Province

Hello friends, today I will be talking about Nuoro Province, a beautiful piece of Sardinia that covers an area of over 5,600 km². The population of the province is approximately 200,000 inhabitants and is bordered to the north by the province of Sassari, to the west by the province of Oristano and to the south by the province of Sud Sardegna. Nuoro Province has many treasures to discover, and I am sure you will appreciate its history and natural beauty.

History

The history of Nuoro Province is interesting and varied. The capital, Nuoro, has played an increasingly central role from an administrative, cultural and political point of view over the surrounding territories since the end of the eighteenth century. In 1779, Pope Pius VI chose Nuoro as the episcopal seat of the diocese of Galtellì. In 1807, Nuoro became the seat of the Prefecture Court, and in 1821 it became a province until 1848, when it was suppressed and transformed into an administrative and Intendency division.

This body was abolished in 1859 with the Rattazzi decree, the year in which the provinces were reinstated. However, Nuoro was no longer the capital but merely a sub-prefecture falling under the province of Sassari. Nuoro Province was reinstated during fascism in 1927, and counted 7 historic regions: Barbagie, Baronie, Ogliastra, Marghine, Planargia, Sarcidano and Montiferru. During the Second World War, Nuoro was not bombed, but there were many bombings in the province, such as Macomer and the port of Arbatax on April 23, 1943, which claimed the lives of 13 people.

Attractions

Nuoro Province has many attractions worth visiting, such as Lake Gusana, a large body of water immersed in pristine nature, the Gola di Gorropu, the largest gorge in Europe, and the National Park of the Gulf of Orosei and Gennargentu. Nuoro Province also offers many outdoor activities, such as trekking, climbing and water sports along the coast. There are also historical sites such as the Sardinian Ethnographic Museum, located in the center of Nuoro, which houses a precious collection of period artifacts, such as traditional clothing, jewelry and crafts.

Industry

In the early 1970s, an important industrialization effort took place in the province thanks to the funding of the Cassa del Mezzogiorno, with the construction of the Ottana petrochemical plant and the Arbatax paper mill, which provided employment for many people. Furthermore, thanks to the policies of sustainable tourism development, the hospitality, food, drink and local artisan industries are growing sustainably, alongside the natural beauty and history of the province.

Conclusions

Nuoro Province is a magical place, where nature, history and industry come together to form a unique and suggestive reality. Its history, culture and natural beauty are truly unique and must be discovered. I hope you can come and visit this magical place and understand the enormous value it has for Sardinia and Italy.
