Laviano

Welcome to Laviano

Hello everyone! I've decided to tell you the story and the characteristics of my hometown, Laviano, which is located in the province of Salerno in Campania, Italy. Our small town has a population of 1,306 and its origins date back to the Sabine people. After the destruction caused by the earthquake in 1980, the old town was completely rebuilt and now our population mainly lives off agriculture, forestry, and livestock. Our industry is mainly based on the processing of dairy products and the Colline Salernitane D.O.P. extra-virgin olive oil. But let's talk about the physical geography of Laviano!

Laviano: Small Campanian Municipality Between Mountains and Traditions

Physical Geography

Territory

Our town is located 475 meters above sea level, in the western and highest part of the Sele River Valley, on the northwestern slopes of Mount Eremita. Our municipal territory belongs to the southern Apennines and is characterized by strong altimetric variations. In our area, you can admire several natural beauties, and certainly the tourist trails and itineraries represent a good opportunity to fully experience these wonders. In fact, some of the most famous and visited places are the Medieval Castle and the Tibetan Bridge, which I highly recommend you visit!

Seismology

As you know, our area has been affected by many earthquakes. In fact, from 1400 to 2000, we experienced a total of 22 seismic events. Laviano is located in Zone 1, which is the most dangerous and high-risk zone for earthquakes according to the Seismic Classification of the Ordinance of the President of the Council of Ministers.

Climate

The climate in Laviano is rather cool and temperate, with annual temperatures ranging between 8 and 12 degrees Celsius, but dropping to around 4-5 degrees Celsius on our high altitudes.

Resources and Attractions

As I mentioned earlier, in Laviano our population mainly lives off agriculture, forestry, and livestock. The processing of dairy products and extra-virgin olive oil represents our main source of industry. But in our area, you can also find many tourist attractions, such as the Medieval Castle and the Tibetan Bridge. Another highly appreciated place for its natural beauties is the Valle delle Conche, fed by the Valle Porcaro spring. In the past, it was possible to swim in its waters, but after the earthquake, the waters infiltrated the soil and now flow into the Sele River.

Conclusions

I hope this brief journey to discover Laviano has piqued your curiosity! In our small town, you can immerse yourself in nature, taste typical products, and visit our historical sites. If you're in the area, I invite you to come and visit us and enjoy our hospitality. See you soon!
