Geography

The municipality of Laveno-Mombello covers an area of 11.5 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 8,400 inhabitants. The town borders Castelveccana, Cittiglio, Caravate, Leggiuno, and Sangiano. Laveno-Mombello is in fact one of the main centers of Lake Maggiore, thanks to its marina and a pier from which ferries depart all year round, carrying cars to Verbania-Intra.

What to see in Laveno-Mombello

The historic center of the town is located in a wide natural inlet, opposite Verbania-Intra. By gaining altitude, you can also reach some more particular attractions such as the Garibaldi fort, located at the northernmost point of the gulf, which allows you to enjoy a breathtaking view of the surroundings.

The imposing Sasso del Ferro mountain

Not far from the town is the imposing Sasso del Ferro mountain. The best way to reach the top of the mountain, from which you can enjoy a panorama that ranges over the lake and the pre-Alps, up to Milan, is thanks to the Laveno-Poggio Sant'Elsa cable car.

History - from the medieval village to ceramics

In the municipality there are traces of historical settlement dating back to ancient times, even as far back as 3000 BC in Mombello (Laveno-Mombello). During the middle ages, the town was a fishing village. Over time, the most important noble families linked to Laveno were the Visconti and the Borromeo, to whom the territory was enfeoffed, the Tinelli di Gorla, the counts Guilizzoni, and the 'Sessa (family)', owners of the Ceresolo in Cerro fraction.

But it was from the 19th century onwards that Laveno-Mombello became famous for its famous ceramic factories, among the largest in Europe. The factories, now closed, have nevertheless given rise to a ceramic museum, one of the most interesting museums in the town.

Monuments and places of interest

Finally, among the attractions to see, the town offers several religious architectures, including the church of S. Maria in Ca' Deserta in Laveno, of remote origin and completely rebuilt in 1756 on the design of the architect Gioachino Besozzi.
