Santa Giulia
The church of Santa Giulia di Corsica in Lavagna: a brief introduction
The church of Santa Giulia di Corsica is located in the hamlet of Santa Giulia di Centaura, in the municipality of Lavagna, in the metropolitan city of Genoa. It is a Catholic church and is part of the Vicariate of Chiavari-Lavagna of the Diocese of Chiavari.
History of the church
The church of Santa Giulia di Corsica already existed as a chapel in a document from the eleventh century dated 1031, which means that the building was built before that date. It was transformed into its current church in 1654. The church is named after St. Giulia, patron saint of Corsica and Livorno, as already indicated in ancient documents. In 1797, the Immaculate Conception parish of the Cavi di Lavagna hamlet was detached from the parish community, and in 1909, the parish of Santa Maria Assunta of Sorlana was also detached. Since 1900, it has been the seat of the provostship.
Description of the church and preserved works
The church houses the relics of Santa Giulia di Corsica, brought in 1724. Among the preserved works of art, there is a wooden crucifix dating back to the fourteenth century, perhaps of Byzantine workmanship; the triptych of "Il Volto Santo" from the sixteenth century by the painter Giovanni Mazone - although recent studies attribute the authorship of the painting to Teramo Piaggio - and in the apse, there is a painting depicting St. Giulia and other saints from 1517.
